President Donald Trump’s calls for an increased police response haven’t been widely embraced by mayors and governors, though because of Washington D.C.’s unique federal status the nation’s capital more closely mirrored his vision.

On the other side of the country, Los Angeles said it would pursue a different agenda entirely. The city announced plans to trim its police budget and use that money to invest in the city’s black community.
