“Dark Lady” is downright funereal.
Outspoken President Trump critic Cher posted an emoji-filled tweet early Thursday morning slamming the commander-in-chief’s “herd immunity” solution to conquering COVID-19 in the U.S.
“Seems 200,000 dead isn’t enough carnage, misery for Trump,” tweeted the Academy Award-winning actress. “We MUST BE AWARE when he starts this insane treatment. We must protect ourselves and those who will surely (die).”
Instead of spelling out “die,” Cher used an emoji depicting a wooden casket.
During his live, televised town hall special on Tuesday, Trump touted a herd-immunity approach to coronavirus — in which a significant proportion of the population becomes infected as a means of reducing infection likelihood of those lacking immunity.
Trump provided one of his many unforced errors of the night by clumsily referring to it as “herd mentality.”
After the president attempted to assure moderator George Stephanopoulos that the disease would disappear without a vaccine, he added that it would be “herd developed.”
Cher churned out an accompanying tweet 20 minutes later spelling out how lethal Trump’s haphazard approach could be.
“Trump (wants) to use “HERD IMMUNITY” as treatment for COVID. This means no one tries to protect themselves in any way,” she tweeted.
On Wednesday’s episode of “The Rachel Maddow Show,” the MSNBC host crunched the numbers to establish just how many American lives could be lost if the country accepts herd immunity.
Using the established fatality rate of 2.97% of coronavirus-infected Americans dying from it, Maddow’s math illustrates that more than 6.3 million Americans could die from the disease. Even best-case scenarios in which the death rate is cut to one-third would mean approximately 2.15 million fatalities.
As of Thursday, nearly 30 million COVID-19 cases have been reported worldwide with more than 942,000 fatalities, according to health tracker Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. has accounted for about 21% of all coronavirus deaths despite possessing just 5% of the planet’s population.
