Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s won a third consecutive mandate after defeating Erin O’Toole’s in the Sept. 20 federal election. The Liberals will have a stable government, but fall short of regaining a parliamentary majority. For the second straight election, Trudeau’s party trailed the Conservatives in the popular vote.
The left-leaning and Quebec’s separatist party, the , maintained their support. The ’ popular vote collapsed, but it still held onto some seats. The saw their vote share surge from 1.6% in 2019 to around 5%, but have yet to convert it into seats in parliament.
The final seat count for each party may still not be known before mail ballots are accounted for, a process that could take several days. In 2019, only about 50,000 people chose postal voting, but more than 1 million mail-in ballots have been issued this year.
