Inflation Tracker: Where Prices Are Hot—and Where They’re Not

Bloomberg Opinion’s smorgasbord of 35 indicators shows inflation isn’t transitory, but it probably won’t last as long as past episodes.

Is inflation a transitory effect of the pandemic that will dissipate as bottlenecks ease and comparisons move farther from the lockdowns in the spring of 2020? Or is it something worse?

To figure that out, I and some colleagues at Bloomberg Opinion assembled an inflation tracker made up of 35 indicators that gets updated weekly. The indicators flash a deep orange if the readings are well above the average for the last decade, and blue if they are below. In the inaugural run, on June 14, there were a few blazing rectangles—like car rentals—but the overall picture gave little cause for concern.
