Hong Kong’s Covid-19 outbreak likely peaked last week at about 50,000 cases a day, an official said, with more than 31,000 new infections reported Thursday. The government is adding thousands of new isolation units for the infected, but said it won’t reopen to international travel until the crisis has passed.

The city has identified nine sites to be used as isolation facilities, leader Carrie Lam said as she resumed daily virus briefings for the media as Hong Kong went from virus-free to having the highest death rate in the world in just a few months.
