A Day of Violence in Crisis-Hit Sri Lanka: In Pictures

Violence erupted across Sri Lanka after months of protests over sky-high inflation, food and fuel shortages, that has left the island nation teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.

Protesters were reported to have targeted homes of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s ruling-party lawmakers following the resignation of his brother Mahinda as premier. Police used teargas and water cannons to break up protests as demonstrators defied a nationwide curfew, imposed after Rajapaksa’s opponents clashed with government supporters in downtown Colombo.
