News today on Greece's rail crash at Tempi, which still hasn't gone to trial after 2 years. An investigation published today found that - as protestors had suspected - there may indeed have been some un-recorded flammable substance onboard the train when it crashed killing 57 in February 2023. In a country where a cover-up is widely suspected, this will stoke anger as the country prepares to commemorate the crash with national demonstrations and a general strike. While the impact and immediate fireball caused most casualties, the report deduces, between five and seven people were likely killed by fires that happened after impact. Substances recorded as present on the train - such as silicone coolant - cannot account for the strength of these fires, suggesting that the train was carrying something else (possibly illicitly) that caused it. They can't be sure, however, because evidence was destroyed to the point of uselessness within days of the crash. None of this proves criminal activity, of course, but it certainly doesn't look good.
