The US Supreme Court decision striking down New York’s restrictions on concealed-carry handgun permits rattled a state already wrestling with a surge in shootings.

In Thursday’s ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, the court struck down a law that allowed local officials to restrict concealed-carry permits to those who could demonstrate a need for protection beyond the average citizen’s. Henceforth, it will be far easier to qualify for permits, and similar laws in California, New Jersey and Massachusetts and four other states will also be voided by the ruling.
