Trump to appoint Ducey adviser Joseph Cuffari to Homeland Security post

President Donald Trump on Thursday announced plans to appoint Joseph Cuffari, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey's policy adviser for military and veterans affairs, as inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security.

Cuffari has decades of experience in military, investigative and government roles, both in the United States and abroad. 

He has held leadership positions with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations; the Department of Defense Office of the Inspector General; and the Justice Department, the White House said in a statement.

He became former Gov. Jan Brewer's public-safety policy adviser in 2013 after serving as assistant special agent in charge for the Tucson Office of the Inspector General.

"Dr. Cuffari has been an important part of our team," Ducey spokesman Daniel Ruiz said Thursday. "Our loss is their gain, and we couldn't be happier for Joe as he begins this new opportunity."

Cuffari would replace acting Inspector General John V. Kelly, not to be confused with former Homeland Security Secretary and current White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly.
