The National Mall Is Hosting a Pop-Up Exhibit for New Monuments

Six monument-makers tasked with “telling stories that haven’t been heard” will bring temporary memorials to Washington, DC, in August.

”Pulling Together” artists Derrick Adams and Tiffany Chung tour the District of Columbia War Memorial, a monument to servicemen and women from Washington, DC, and the city’s only memorial to people from the District.

Six new monuments will open on the National Mall next year as part of an initiative to expand the reach and vision of the nation’s cultural and commemorative treasury.

The monuments won’t last for eternity: They’re part of an exhibit slated to open in August 2023 as part of the 60th anniversary celebration of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom led by Martin Luther King Jr.
