If you spend time cooking, or even just watching The Great British Bake Off, you know that in the kitchen, timing is everything. Underwork butter and sugar for a batch of cookies, and you get dense little pucks. Overwork the meringue for a pavlova, and you’ll have a grainy, deflated disaster.

GE Profile contends that its $999 Smart Mixer with Auto Sense will help prevent these and other mishaps. For such tasks, it monitors “changes in texture and viscosity through motor torque feedback,” it explains, a fancy way of saying the device can automatically adjust to avoid over- or undermixing. App-supported “guided” recipes, meanwhile, help even novice bakers turn out handshake-worthy treats such as marshmallows or chocolate-peppermint cheesecake.
