As we did during the Biden administration, Bloomberg Opinion has picked a set of metrics to focus on during Donald Trump's second term. And I, once again, am the crime guy. In general, crime in the US is headed in the right direction (down), and has been for a couple of years. The murder rate, which skyrocketed in 2020, is now back to about what it was before the pandemic. Oddly, though, aggravated assaults (that is, assaults for the purpose of inflicting severe bodily injury) are barely falling, and still much more common than in 2019. Why so many assaults? It's hard to say. Trump tends to link crime to illegal immigration, but in general the statistics don't back that up. Maybe it's mental health, or the lingering economic and social damage to cities from the events of 2020. In any case, we'll keep an eye on it. https://lnkd.in/eem6AD3G

Trump is the first president in decades to win office, in part, due to inflation, and he has the chance to play the conquering hero.
